CRIME NEWS

  • Chesapeake police responded to a domestic assault at an apartment complex on Willow Bridge Court just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when two officers were shot and taken to hospital with injuries that are not life threatening—authorities say they are still looking for the suspect and checking on a woman's status as officers secure the scene and close Greenbrier Parkway between City Park Drive and Kempsville Road.  13 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hampton Public Library held a preview of the new PBS Kids series Weather Hunters on Wednesday—an event that came as federal funding cuts put about $2 million at risk for local station WHRO. Teacher Karen Jordan brought her preschool class to the screening to highlight the role of quality public broadcasting for early education.  3 WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Navy Adm. Daryl L. Caudle ended his command of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command on Wednesday at Naval Station Norfolk, saying it was an honor to lead his team. The Senate confirmed his nomination for chief of naval operations last Thursday—navy officials said a transition period will follow after his service since 2021.  3 WTKR
  • Chesapeake’s Public Safety Operations Center was awarded three grants totaling $399,000 by the Virginia 911 Services Board to improve training, technology, and staff support—some funds may buy new chairs for those on 12-hour shifts. Implementation will begin this fall as the center explores new tools like artificial intelligence.  3 WTKR
  • Chesapeake is launching a 20-year plan to guide its growth—covering transportation, housing and business development—while addressing traffic hazards like those on Elbow Road. City spokesperson Jimmy McNamara said the plan will include a Master Transportation component and invites residents to join upcoming public feedback sessions.  3 WTKR
  • Today, the Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers are calling people, claiming they missed jury duty—and then directing them to realistic fake government websites to steal personal details and collect fines up to $10,000 via cryptocurrency. Chesapeake residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such calls and verify any jury duty notices directly with local courts.  13 News Now
