  • Women from Chesapeake Regional Medical Center helped build two new homes for single mothers during Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads’ Women Build Week on Vincent Avenue in the Ballentine Place neighborhood—volunteers learned construction skills and expect the houses to be finished by Thanksgiving.  3 WTKR

  • A Chesapeake man, Justin D. Vieira, died after his car left the road on eastbound I-264 near Greenwood Drive at about 7:15 p.m.—state police said he was speeding and not wearing his seatbelt when his vehicle hit a guardrail, landed on top of him and no one else was injured.  13 News Now

  • Virginia’s 3-day sales tax holiday will run from August 1 at 12:01 a.m. to August 3 at 11:59 p.m.—shoppers will get tax-free deals on eligible school supplies, clothing, and hurricane preparedness items with strict price limits.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since 1984, the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office has run a program to guide victims and witnesses through the court process and provide support and community resources—its services exceeded 30,000 in 2024. The program offers a free support group for homicide survivors that meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.—residents can call the Sheriff’s Office to register or get more information.  13 News Now
