GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hampton Roads Transit is offering free rides, a new website with activity resources, and a Student Transit Riders Commission to bring back kids and teens who have been riding less since COVID. The commission meets today in Hampton, and teens from six cities have applied — officials say these steps will help secure the future of transit. 13 News Now
- ➤ The VA announced it will cut nearly 30,000 jobs by the end of September instead of the originally projected 70,000—80,000 positions, with reductions managed through normal attrition, voluntary early retirements, and deferred resignations. Military families and local veterans remain concerned over the potential impact on support services. 13 News Now
- ➤ The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works approved reauthorization of 18 Veterans Affairs facilities, including a proposed outpatient clinic in Hampton Roads that will have 182,230 square feet of space and 1,250 parking spaces with a nearly $10.5 million annual lease (up to 20 years). U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised the vote and urged final approval from the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs to expand health care access for Virginia’s veterans. 13 News Now
