COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is holding its third annual corn harvest at Izzie's Field in Courtland from July 8 through July 10 to gather nearly 50,000 pounds of locally grown corn for families as potential SNAP changes may shrink grocery budgets. Volunteers who are at least 12 years old and able to lift between 35 to 40 pounds are asked to sign up for shifts from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  13 News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, police say a car ran off the road at the BP gas station on S. Military Highway in Chesapeake and hit two men selling watermelons from a pickup truck, killing one and injuring the other — investigators may press charges.  3 WTKR
  • On Monday, a team of Good Samaritans, rescue workers, and a Virginia Institute of Marine Science researcher saved a woman swept upstream in the York River near Gloucester Point—she was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kevin Will of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia warned that a $4 million funding freeze may force 14–15 clubs to close—jeopardizing after-school and summer programs for local children. Delegate Sam Rasoul has written to federal representatives to push for the funds’ release while national estimates show up to 220,000 kids and 5,900 jobs could be affected.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USS John F. Kennedy, the Navy’s next aircraft carrier, was scheduled for completion in July 2025 but will now be finished in 2027 due to delays in new technology testing—this delay will leave the Navy with one fewer carrier until the new ship is ready.  3 WTKR
  • Chesapeake City Council approved an additional 2% hike in water and sewer rates that will take effect January 1 — adding to a 2.9% increase already in place and a planned 4.9% rise each year through fiscal year 2032. City Manager Christopher Price said the change will raise the average family’s monthly bill by about $3.10.  13 News Now
