- ➤ Eight service dogs in training entered Chesapeake Sentara Simulation Center Thursday as they completed the final phase of their training. Mutts with a Mission trained the dogs to help veterans & first responders. 3 WTKR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Chesapeake Bay Program watershed model shows a 15.3% drop in nitrogen, a 21.8% drop in phosphorous and a 7.6% drop in sediment pollution entering the bay from 2009 to 2024—Virginia’s efforts with improved agriculture practices, animal waste storage, urban tree planting and shoreline stabilization helped reduce pollution although 2025 reduction goals remain unmet and the blue crab population fell this year. 3 WTKR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new report shows Virginia now has the lowest recidivism rate at 17.6%, with state programs in education, job training, and reentry planning helping fewer people return to prison (this rate is the lowest in over 20 years). Ex-offender Sincere Allah, pardoned in 2022 after serving 24 years, now works to help others stay out of prison. 13 News Now
- ➤ Gov. Youngkin signed a law that will limit social media use to one hour each day for kids under 16, with platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok required to check user ages (parents may extend the limit) to curb screen time. The law will take effect in January and aims to improve student focus and mental health. 13 News Now
- ➤ ICE will now hold undocumented detainees for 72 hours at Chesapeake Correctional Center after a new deal with the sheriff's office replaces the 48-hour hold—this extra time speeds up transport from Norfolk—and some immigration attorneys have raised concerns over the change. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Chesapeake will build a 45,000 square foot municipal center on Poindexter Street in South Norfolk and a 28,000 square foot pool with a 25-yard pool near the Cuffee Activity Center— the center will house several departments including a police precinct. Construction will begin in July or August and is expected to finish in fall while plans for the pool are still being developed. 3 WTKR
