Violent crime spiked across Hampton Roads as several people were injured in shootings over two weeks; in response, Portsmouth police increased patrols and launched PEACE Week — a series of community events including cooking classes, a gospel concert, STEM activities and a youth basketball camp — to deter further violence.

Residents in Chesapeake have reported several bear sightings in recent weeks — one homeowner witnessed bears three times and experienced damage such as a knocked-over bird feeder and a broken screen door.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources advises residents to secure trash and pet food as bears emerge from winter dens.
