- ➤ Greenbrier Mall was sold in February for $22.3 million—over three times the starting bid—and is now owned by Michael Sifen, a general contractor from Virginia Beach who purchased the 55 acres that hold most of the mall's stores. Local residents now await his plans to revive the space as declining foot traffic from online shopping has left the 82%-occupied mall in need of new life. 3 WTKR
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hampton police charged 35-year-old John Jones Jr.—the armed suspect shot after he brandished his firearm when officers responded near the 4800 block of 81st Street on Monday—with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, brandishing and reckless handling of a firearm, and he was treated at a hospital then released while the officers remain on leave as the investigation continues. 3 WTKR

- ➤ Douglass Park Elementary in Portsmouth is offering $30,000 stipends over the next three years to attract licensed teachers and raise student achievement. At the end of the program, the district will review its impact on teacher retention, student attendance and parent involvement and may expand the initiative to other schools. 3 WTKR

- ➤ Rep. Jen Kiggans wrote an opinion piece urging the Navy to base F-35 jets at NAS Oceana—she argued that adding the East Coast base will help fund needed improvements and create jobs.
