Chesapeake City Council is reviewing a proposed 2-cent real estate tax increase that would add about $80 a year for a $400,000 property and spend extra funds on public safety programs—equipment, hiring, and repairs— while a public hearing is set for April 8.

Chesapeake is planning a new look for the busy Greenbrier area (a main commercial hub) and held a public meeting on Monday to get residents' feedback; the plan may include new stores, homes, dining (and an event center) at the large mall.

City leaders will take the plan to the planning commission and city council for a vote sometime this year.
